Maracha, Nebbi and Zombo (MANZO) Youth Empowerment Project (MAYEP) was a 3-year project whose goal was to ‘contribute to sustainable poverty reduction among youth in West Nile Region, Northern Uganda’. The
project’s specific objective was to ‘increase access to employment/self-employment opportunities for 3,000 youth in Zombo, Nebbi, Maracha districts in West Nile Region.’ The broader objective of the project is to "contribute to the reduction of hunger and extreme poverty in Zombo District, Uganda" and its specific objective is to “empower 227 smallholder farming families (56% women) in Jangokoro sub- county to increase their production, consumption and marketing of diversified agricultural products” with the objective of promoting the production, consumption, and marketing of diversified agricultural products in an environmentally sustainable and gender-sensitive manner using the farmers’ Cooperative Society as an engine for growth. The key implementation approaches include: (i) Sustainable agricultural intensification approach to increase and diversify the agricultural productivity; (ii) Strengthening the market participation of small farmers through the newly registered cooperative society; and (iii) Financial inclusion using the VSLA and IGA training.
