Children in Nebbi district faced a number of challenges that inhibited their growth and development, namely, low awareness of children and women’s rights; inability of parents to provide for children’s basic needs; poor
sanitation and hygiene practices; high youth unemployment and; weak people Institutions. Erussi –Ndhew Community Development was a 5-year project that sought to contribute to the reduction of child poverty in Erussi/Ndhew sub-counties in Nebbi district. It targeted 6,000 poor people (1,200 Children, 3,200 Women and 1,600 Youths) and indirectly 20,000 people.
Project achievements
- Women took up leadership positions in their communities - schools, water sources, local councils and 75% of the members started businesses through which they are able to meet their family’s basic needs (school costs, medical bills, food purchase, and clothing). The number of women who reported being empowered increased from 41% to 96%.
- Child poverty declined from 91% to 50%; extreme poverty from 96% to 81%; and food security increased from 43% to 84%.
